Dedicated to Protecting Policyholders and Elevating Professional Standards — The Institute of Public Loss Assessors (IPLA) Represents Regulated Experts Who Stand for Fair, Ethical, and Expert – Led Insurance Claims Support.

At the Institute of Public Loss Assessors (IPLA), we are committed to upholding the rights of policyholders during the insurance claims process. Our mission is rooted in a simple yet powerful belief: insurance should provide genuine financial support when it is needed most—not create further hardship.
Founded to support professional standards across the loss assessing sector, the IPLA exists to ensure claimants receive fair, ethical, and expert representation when dealing with insurers. We act as a beacon of integrity, guidance, and advocacy in an industry where the power dynamics often favour large insurance companies.
Why the IPLA Exists
While insurance is designed to offer protection and peace of mind, the reality for many claimants can be far from reassuring. Insurers typically appoint their own loss adjusters—professionals paid to protect the insurer’s financial interests. These adjusters may not always act impartially, especially when interpreting grey areas or ambiguous terms within a policy.
This is where loss assessors step in—acting on behalf of the insured, not the insurer. Loss Assessors ensure that your claim is presented accurately, your rights are defended, and the settlement offered is just and comprehensive. However, not all Loss Assessors offer the same level of service and professionalism. The IPLA was established to set the gold standard.
Who We Serve
The IPLA supports:
We protect the interests of the insured by empowering assessors with the tools, resources, and community they need to operate with transparency, credibility and professionalism.
All Individual Members of the IPLA are required to be authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics. This ensures that every assessor within our network delivers service of the highest calibre.
We also offer Corporate Memberships for firms with six or more assessors, and Honorary Fellowships recognising exceptional contributions to the field. In addition, companies outside the profession may become Corporate Associates, showing their support for ethical Loss Assessing without implying accreditation.
Whether you are a seasoned assessor, an industry entrant, or a business that supports fairness in insurance, the IPLA welcomes you.
Together, we’re raising standards, protecting claimants, and transforming the public’s experience of insurance.
